Nigeria’s Super Falcons started their campaign for a 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with an impressive 3-0 victory over Tunisia in their Group B opener on Sunday. Goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo ensured the Super Falcons achieved their first-ever win against Tunisia in their second matchup at the WAFCON. Their first meeting in the 2008 tournament’s group stage ended in a 0-0 draw. Oshoala put Nigeria ahead in the fourth minute, heading in a low in-swinging free-kick from Babajide on the left. Babajide extended their lead to 2-0 just before halftime, driving into the box from the left and scoring with a low shot past the Tunisian goalkeeper, marking her debut goal in a senior international tournament. Right before halftime, Ashleigh Plumptre had a header that potentially made it 3-0 but was called back for a foul on the Tunisian keeper. The Super Falcons maintained their strong performance in the second half, though they struggled with finishing chances. Plumptre attempted a long-range lob that seemed headed for the goal, but the goalkeeper managed to deflect it over the bar. Veteran defender Osinachi Ohale squandered a prime opportunity by sending her shot over the bar with the goal open. Substitute Esther Okoronkwo nearly scored as her shot hit the post after skillfully getting past her defender in the penalty area. In the 75th minute, the Tunisians appealed for a penalty, but after a VAR review, it was dismissed. The Super Falcons secured their lead when Ihezuo scored in the 84th minute, making it 3-0. She volleyed in a header from Okoronkwo following a cross from Plumptre. This victory placed the nine-time African champions at the top of Group B, ahead of the later match between Algeria and Botswana. The Super Falcons are set to face Botswana at Stade Larbi Zaouli on Thursday, while Tunisia will compete against Algeria. By James Agberebi.
