Tsakani – JE Malope Secondary School obtained the third position with an 81.2% for the 2024 matric past rate among schools in Tsakane.
The school principal, Alice Makgalemele, said she is happy with the school’s matric pass rate and mentioned that the school has been performing exceptionally well over the years.
“2024 was a difficult year for us as a school. We came across a lot of challenges, but we managed to overcome them. We had classes on session initiation protocol (SIP) for our matric learners but the attendance was very poor.
“Our pass rate in 2023 was 79.6%. I am very happy with our achievement,” said Makgalemele.
Makgalemele extended gratitude to her staff members, saying they worked as a team to ensure that they produced good marks.
“I want the 2024 learners to continue working hard even in varsity. I wish them all the best for their future. I hope they are going to continue to perform well and later return to plough back into their community,” she added.
Sonwabile Ndabeni is the top achiever at the school, obtaining seven distinctions in geography, life sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, life orientation, English (first additional language) and IsiZulu (home language).
“I was surprised to discover that I obtained distinctions in geography and life sciences. Afternoon classes, morning classes and attending extra classes in another school to hear different perspectives helped me very much.
“2025 learners should do their best and sacrifice their all to uproot good results at the end of the year,” said Ndabeni.
His life sciences teacher Lerato Ndlovu described Ndabeni as an intelligent learner who never wrote notes in class.
“Ndabeni is an audio learner. He is a hard worker who managed to pass very well. He managed to motivate other learners throughout the year last year. He taught his classmates when they did not understand certain things. This made him extra special and made him unleash his full potential,” added Ndlovu.

CoE chief whip Ald Palesa Nkunjana extended her congratulatory remarks to the class of 2024.
“There are township learners who come from underprivileged backgrounds but despite all the socio-economic challenges they managed to prove that nothing is impossible.
“I would also like to extend words of encouragement and thankfulness to the educators, unions the Department of Education, school governing bodies and ward councillor.
“They have worked collectively hard and have provided consistent and enough support to township schools. They ensured that the learners’ needs were met and provided for,” said Nkunjana.
She added that these learners faced Covid-19 in the beginning of their high school years, saying she wishes them nothing but success in their future endeavours.
