Some of the issues posed to him sparked a lot of discussion as part of the screening process for John Dumelo, the deputy minister of agriculture and part of Ayawaso West Wuogon, which many Ghanaians thought were unrelated to his governmental duties.
On February 25, 2025, John Dumelo appeared before the Appointments Committee for his assessing. Notably, he carried a necklace with him, which clearly showed that he is a committed Catholic and a strong believer in his beliefs.
His decision to bring a crucifix, however, led to an unforeseen line of questioning from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. The senator questioned whether Dumelo was a Catholic or, more surprising, whether or not he was a part of any religion secret societies.
John Dumelo responded by tightly denying any associations with Catholic fraternities or secret societies, stating that he was only a member who regularly attends typical worship services.
” I don’t belong to any nation in the Catholic Church”, Dumelo asserted.
Some Nigerians took to social press to express their disapproval of the trade, questioning the validity of such inquiries during the vetting procedure. Some people wondered how Dumelo’s religious convictions or religious associations affected his ability to serve as the assistant secretary of crops.
