President Xi Jinping met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday, urging stronger bilateral ties between China and the United States.
The Chinese President believes most of the pressing global problems can be resolved if Washington and Beijing deepen their relations and maintain close contacts.
Xi stated that his visit, following Trump’s invitation, aims to foster friendship, expand partnership and promote the well-being of the people of both countries.
Citing global changes driven by artificial intelligence and geopolitical shifts, he said China and the U.S. shoulder “a historic responsibility of advancing human development and progress.”
Xi reiterated his dedication to developing the China-U.S. “relationship of strategic stability,” recalling that the international community had lauded the agreement sealed during Trump’s visit.
Noting that the interests of China and the U.S. “are deeply intertwined,” Xi encouraged government departments to strengthen communication and “cooperate with sincerity.”
“China-U.S. cooperation may not solve every problem in the world,” he admitted. “But, without our cooperation, it would be hard to solve many of the world’s problems.”
With the two sides leading in AI, Xi said both nations have a responsibility to ensure that AI development “is always under human control” and serves the people’s welfare and prosperity.
He proposed increased direct flights to facilitate two-way travel and trade, assuring that Chinese counternarcotics and law enforcement agencies are willing to enhance coordination with U.S. counterparts.
The leader told Trump that China keeps its door “wide open” to American companies, saying Beijing hopes Chinese firms “are treated fairly here in the United States.”
As a mark of friendship, President Xi announced that two pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, will arrive at their new home, Zoo Atlanta in Georgia, in a few days.
