Young Security Officer Shot Dead In Umbilo Suburb In Durban Named As Siyabonga Mkhize 

Durban – Gunshots rang out in Rick Turner Road in the Umbilo suburb at about 4.30 pm yesterday, Sunday 16 August 2026.

It later emerged that a security officer had been killed. He had been shot multiple times.

ALS Paramedics, ambulances, and Advanced Life Support Units were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls for medical assistance.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said: ”The officer went into a state of Cardiac Arrest, and despite a lengthy resuscitation effort, the officer’s injuries were too serious, and the officer was declared deceased”.  

No one knows why he was gunned down.

Police were probing the circumstances leading up to the deadly shooting.

Today, Monday, 17 August 2026, The Bulrushes can reveal that the murdered security officer was a young man in his 20’s named Siyabonga Mkhize.

His employer, Patron Shield Security, said: “It is with profound sadness that Patron Shield Security announces the passing of Siyabonga Mkhize, who lost his life in the line of duty while serving and protecting our community”.

Describing him as a “gentleman’’ and a “man among men”, Patron Shield Security said Siyabonga served with courage, dedication, and always with a smile.

“His willingness to stand in harm’s way in the service of our community is a testament to the man he was, always professional and passionate; he was a man among men,” Patron Shield Security said.

“Many who had been privileged enough to have had interactions with Siyabonga would have found him to have been a Gentleman and a quiet pillar of strength within the community.

“He carried out his duties with immense dedication, courage, and distinction.

“Day in and day out, Siyabonga embodied the highest ideals of public service, putting the safety and security of our community above all else.”

Patron Shield Security offered its condolences to Mkhize’s family, friends, and colleagues.

“Our deepest, most heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and all who knew him,” Patron Shield Security said.

“We stand with you in your grief, and we pledge that the memory and service of our fallen hero, Siyabonga, will never be forgotten.

“We honour his service, remember his sacrifice, and remain grateful for the life he gave in the protection of others.

“May his service never be forgotten.

“Gone from our sight, but never forgotten.”

Patron Shield Security also thanked all first responders and security companies that assisted at the scene.
