Zama Zamas Fighting In Mpumalanga: 2nd Body Found In As Many Days

Mashobote – The body of a murdered man has been found along the N4 in Mashobote, near Mbombela (Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.

Mpumalanga Police Spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said the body found with gunshot wounds on Thursday, 1 October 2026, was the second discovered in the area in as many days.

The first body was also discovered abandoned in Mashobote, near Schoemanskloof, under the Ngodwana policing precinct on Wednesday, 30 September 2026.

Brigadier Mdhluli said, “The body was discovered by a member of the community who then alerted the police.”

Earlier this week, police recovered a discarded empty magazine for an AK-47 rifle and two bullets amid ongoing fighting between illegal miners better known as Zama Zamas.

“It is suspected that the murders could be related to the ongoing fight between rival groups of illegal miners in the area,” Brigadier Mdhluli said.

“Police continue to intensify visibility in the area.

“A case of murder has been opened for investigation.”

Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise said a team of police detectives has been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the matter.

Brigadier Mdhluli said police have “vowed to intensify their investigations” into the murders.
