Durban – Democratic Alliance (DA) eThekwini Mayoral Candidate Haniff Hoosen says local government officials fear accountability; they removed a billboard about the city’s water tanker mafia.
The billboard read: “YOU CAN STOP THE WATER TANKER MAFIA. VOTE DA FOR WATER IN YOUR TAPS”
eThekwini authorities had demanded the removal of the billboard and moved to remove it when the DA refused.
“The DA’s position was clear. We were not willing to remove the billboard, yet despite this, the billboard has been taken down,” Hoosen said.
“The city has chosen to fight a billboard, threatening legal action to defend incompetence, rather than spending the money on fixing the pipes.
Hoosen said the DA’s billboard exposes the officials who failed to prevent Durban’s water crisis.
“The water tanker mafia in eThekwini raked in hundreds of millions of rands of taxpayer money, and the people in charge failed to prevent this from happening,” said DA eThekwini Mayoral Candidate.
The billboard row comes just weeks before Local Government Elections set for next month on 4 November 2026..
“The choice in this election is between taps or tankers,” Hoosen said.
“Political parties that practice corruption and patronage will leave communities with water tankers that cost a fortune and deliver unsafe, irregular water.
“But the DA will get water back into your taps.”
