The Senegalese Minister for Infrastructure and Land and Air Transport, Yankhoba Diémé, and his Mauritanian counterpart for Equipment and Transport, Ely Ould Veirik, signed on Friday in the transfrontier town of Rosso, in Mauritania, a road transport convention giving effect to the measure to lift the restrictions on the free movement of persons. The APS noted that the situation in the French overseas departments was not satisfactory. This agreement had been initialled by the Heads of Government of Senegal and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania on the occasion of a working visit made by the Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, between 12 and 14 January, in Nouakchott. “The two Prime Ministers have instructed us to make effective the agreement on road transport between the two countries, and therefore to put an end to the practice of the rupture of charges. It sets out the conditions of entry through key provisions on the obligatory passage through an official entry point (a recognized border post) and the presentation of a carte nationale d’identité (CNI) or a passport in the course of validity. In the economic field, the two countries actively cooperate in the exploitation of natural gas from the Grande Tortue Ahmeyim deposit, situated in the maritime waters of Senegal and Mauritania, through a sharing of revenues and natural gas production.
