Overgrown grass threatens sports activities at Kwa-Thema Complex

Kwatsaduza – The overgrown grass around the city greatly affects the sports fraternity. Vusi Mthimunye from the TP Football Club in Kwa-Thema said the Kwa-Thema Sports Complex is unusable in its current condition.

“The grass has not been cut in months. We know the grass grows faster in rainy weather, but at this point, no one can play here. If we force matters, our players could be injured,” he said.

Mthimunye stated that even when the metro mows the grass, it does not happen frequently enough. He added that the clubs have paid for grass-cutting services before.

“A sports ground should be maintained at least every two weeks. The grass is supposed to be kept short and trimmed,” he explained.

Mthimunye also believes the complex is a hub for the community.

The overgrown grass at the Kwa-Thema Sports Complex has Vusi Mthimunye concerned about league games meant to start on March 1.

“Each weekend, hundreds of children come to play and watch sports. It would be a shame if games were cancelled because of the overgrown grass. The league games start on March 1,” he said.

The complex boasts a swimming pool, soccer and rugby fields, netball courts and a cricket field. Invasive grass has also made it onto the netball courts.

Zweli Dlamini, the spokesperson for the CoE, said the metro was aware of the grass-cutting issues.

“Teams have already been deployed to cut the grass. The weather has impacted our efforts to address the situation, but grass-cutting teams are on the ground all over the city.

“We apologise for the inconvenience, but the situation is receiving attention,” he said.
