As the country prepares for the arrival of winter, meteorological services are predicting a seasonal scenario marked by a good level of precipitation, but also increased risks of extreme events. The first trends confirm a season of generally normal to excessive rainfall, with important implications for the populations and the authorities. The rains should normally start early in the eastern regions (Kédougou, Tambacounda, Bakel), with the first significant showers expected from the end of May or the beginning of June. In contrast, the west of the country, including the littoral and regions such as Thiès, Dakar and Saint-Louis, could experience a normal to late start, sometimes delayed until mid-June or early July. According to experts, the period from July to September is very wet, particularly in August and September, where the risk of extreme events (strong rains, floods, strong winds) will be high. This situation is due to atmospheric and oceanic conditions favourable to intense rainfall episodes. The authorities also warn of a potential overflow of the watercourse.
